Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, located on the north shore of the Yucatan
Peninsula, halfway between Merida and Cancun, Quintana Roo, and only one hour drive from
Chichen Itza (archaeological site). Within the reserve boundaries is an area covering
approximately 120,000 acres of protected land, comprised of mangrove forest, coastal dunes
vegetation, low deciduous forest, savannas and hummocks. Up to 350 bird species, 56
mammals, 95 reptiles and amphibians have been recorded.
